Opfer

2018

Installation view, Galeria Jaqueline Martins, São Paulo, 2018

The title Opfer (2018) comes from the German title of the film Sacrifice (1986), a posthumous work by Andrei Tarkovsky. Opfer is a pseudo-documentary or reality film shot in a single continuous take. It tells the story of a teenager filming a prank video while having to face a family member's critical illness. The film was performed and shot synchronously, following the timeline of the script, by seven well-trained local actors. It records several coincidental events that happen on an ordinary afternoon. These seemingly unrelated episodes reveal the tranquil yet dangerous atmosphere of the Vila Buarque neighborhood in São Paulo. The male protagonist with the handheld camera might not only be the recorder hiding behind the camera but also a participant in these events.
