The Sweet Movie

2013

Performance view, Future Generation Art Prize, Collateral Event of the 55th Venice Biennale, Palazzo Contarini Polignac, Venice, 2013

Yan Xing's performances often depict absurdity through humor. At the exhibition "Future Generation Art Prize" organized by the Pinchuk Art Center as a Collateral Event in conjunction with the 55th Venice Biennale, he staged a performance at the Palazzo Contarini Polignac about the shooting of a pornographic film. He meticulously arranged a chaotic scenario: an aggressive director given to emotional outbursts constantly arguing with the crew, the producer incessantly calling the lead actor on the phone to get him to come and play his role, the lighting technician adjusting the lights over and over out of dissatisfaction with the director's unprofessional instructions, and the assistant producer wiping the sweat off the actors' faces and fixing their makeup time and again. Filming never actually started, and the audience was caught in a dilemma of waiting.

This work imagines film production through a failed shooting, envisioning the whole through its parts. Yan Xing mischievously questions the nature of performance and offers his interpretation through diverse and unconventional appropriations of visual culture.
