Thief

2015

Yan Xing uses the modern gymnastic discipline of pommel horse as a metaphor in proposing unusual thematic linkages between sexuality, sports, and class. Showcasing animals, humans, and gymnastics, this video delves into intricate traditions of imitation and into the tragic nature of human society. Highly detailed images of animal organs in the sports images hint at the aggressiveness of living beings. They contrast with representations of failed attempts by gymnasts, demonstrating the laws of human conquest and the inevitability of defeat. Then the video shows criminals seeking out their prey in a state of panic and indecision, and who, upon capturing their quarry, are frustrated in their cluelessness as to how to share an oyster. These video segments resonate with one another through their contrasts and transitions. The overarching story is about thieves: thieves stealing animals from nature, thieves mimicking real animals to conquer imagined foes, thieves hesitating in terror, and thieves facing absurdity after a successful theft on account of not knowing what to do with their catch. Through this obscure work, Yan Xing discusses human dilemmas and the nightmares of the middle class. The sexual undertones metaphorically present in the work are what upholds its uniqueness and truth in the face of the Absolute.
