Two videos, three photographs, several related masterpieces, and American art

2013

In this work, which is focused primarily on the United States, Yan Xing employs sculpture, photography, and video to reflect on entrenched visual imagery. He addresses such themes as sexuality and slavery, mother tongue and culture, and the power of imagery and classicism, all of which he integrates into the context of global history. In doing so, he recombines fragmentary traces of the American past and lets them clash against the visual system of his own native Chinese culture. These montage-like image memories not only scrutinize American-style tragedies and traumas but also remain vigilant against the deceptive nature of images as such.
