Kill (the) TV-Set

2012

Installation view, A4 Contemporary Arts Center, Chengdu, 2012

This work consists of two parts. Projected on a screen, a high-definition video shows the 1965 performance, recreated by Yan Xing, of Nam June Paik (1932-2006) and Charlotte Moorman (1933-1991) playing John Cage's (1912-1992) piece 26'1.1499" for a String Player (1955). Simultaneously, on a monitor, a video shows a potted plant, overlaid with the flashing English text "Kill (the) TV-Set."

Through this work, Yan Xing explores the intricate relationships between visual language, technological evolution, and historical context.
