In this installation, the audience observes the work through a display window. The title of an iconic work by Richard Hamilton appears on the monitor, a performer is reading Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon, a live snake is slithering in the sand, and a photograph displays a penis gradually weakening after ejaculation. In the background, Yan Xing’s voice can be heard singing the song "Nanping Evening Bells". Collectively, these elements form a scene that is aesthetically meticulous but replete with abrupt juxtapositions. 

Yan Xing grew up in urban China during the peak of the reform period after the Cultural Revolution, as bits and pieces of modern and contemporary art were spreading throughout China through various channels. These cultural influences frequently surface in his early works. Yan Xing has mastered an ideal modernist style with all its definitions and categorizations, and through this contemporary rhetoric he offers a visual mode that is both stable and threatening. While discussing the evolution of artistic styles, this work also explores the diversity and uniqueness of cultural transformation.
